Wesfarmers Arts Pre-concert Talk

Find out more about the music in the concert with this week’s speaker, Cecilia Sun. The Pre-concert Talk will take place at 9.40am in the Main Auditorium.

Did you know?

Prokofiev wrote his first piano composition at the age of 5, and started composing his first opera and overture at the age of 9.

Sibelius' Symphony No. 5 was commissioned by the Finnish government for Sibelius' own 50th birthday. His stature as a 'national hero' was such that his birthday was declared a national holiday!

The symphony's 'swan theme' showcases a bell-like tolling of chords among four horns that is said to have come to Sibelius after watching a flock of swans pass overhead. For more four horn action, don't miss Miracles and Triumphs later this month.

Composers have been inspired by birds for centuries; Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is one of the most famous examples, featuring imitations of goldfinch, turtle dove and cuckoo.
