The secrets of the world’s most famous symphony

Did you know?

Haydn's Symphony No. 96 is nicknamed 'The Miracle' due to the story that, during its premiere, a chandelier fell from the ceiling of the concert hall in which it was performed. Miraculously, the audience managed to dodge the chandelier.

Later research has suggested that Haydn's symphony's namesake event actually took place during the premiere of the composer's Symphony No. 102!

The horn is one of the oldest instruments, with rudimentary horns dating back to 2400 B.C. Modern orchestral horns date back to the 16th century, with the first valved horn patented in 1818.

The Konzertstück is renowned as a showpiece for horn, so tricky that it was proclaimed by some as virtually unplayable. Schumann's biographer declared of the work, "the difficulties are so horrendous that it needs almost the trump of an archangel to cope with them."

Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 is sometimes known as the 'Fate Symphony', due to the famous four-note opening motif that suggests fate knocking at the door.

Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 was the first major orchestral composition to use trombones.
