Did you know?

Berlioz's Béatrice et Bénédict is an opera heavily inspired by Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Beatrice and Benedict cannot stand each other, so on a lark their friends and families decide to get them together through a series of deceptions. It seems as though the outline of a romantic comedy has changed very little in 400 years!

Béatrice et Bénédict was composed during one of the most difficult periods in Berlioz's life, with the composer grieving the deaths of several loved ones and suffering from ill health. Despite this, the work is one of his lightest, most delightful creations.

Mendelssohn was first inspired to write his Scottish Symphony after seeing the ruins of Holyrood Chapel at Holyrood Palace. The Palace is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland; Queen Elizabeth II spends one week in residence at Holyroodhouse each year at the beginning of summer.

The wealthy Mendelssohn family had a private orchestra at their disposal - very handy for a budding young composer looking to try out new compositions!
