Did you know?

Approximately 10,000 real arrows were used during the first battle scene in Germany.

Gladiator received critical acclaim and won five Oscars, including Best Film and Best Actor.

Digital reconstruction and stuntmen were used to complete the scenes featuring Proximo, after the actor, Oliver Reed, passed away during filming.

In one scene, Maximus confronts real wolves, separated from them by transparent barriers invisible to the cameras to ensure Russell Crowe’s safety but maintain the realism of the scene.

Most of the Rome-set scenes were filmed in Malta, and that included building a replica of the Colosseum. It was 52-feet tall, took seven months to build, and cost $1 million.

Legendary operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti was asked to sing a song for the soundtrack, but he said no. Later he released a recording of "Il Gladiator", the song he was meant to sing.
