Did you know?

Sibelius' String Trio was never finished. Lento was the only movement to be completed.

Mustonen learned the harpsichord first, aged five, then moved to piano and composition almost immediately.

Schubert's Octet in F was commissioned by Count Ferdinand von Troyer, with the specification that he wanted a work similar to Beethoven's Septet. When the Octet premiered, many of Beethoven's Septet players performed in the ensemble.

At just seven years old, Schubert was talent-scouted by composer Antonio Salieri and taken to the Imperial Seminary, where he sang in the choir, played violin in the orchestra and learned music theory from Salieri himself.

Acting Principal Bassoon

What’s your earliest memory of playing music?

My earliest musical memory was playing with my Belarusian grandfather's steal string guitar, that I believe he used while singing with his church buddies in the early days as an immigrant. It was a steal string acoustic (brutal on small fingers) that was stored in a brown cloth drawstring sack for safekeeping. My parents found a guitar teacher for me soon after, at the age seven. I started playing bassoon through a band program at Eltham High School, Victoria when I was 12.
