Did you know?

The text for The Creation had been among Handel's effects at his death and was rumoured to have been intended for the composer synonymous with the oratorio. This, along with his own strong sense of faith, was a key motivating factor for Haydn in composing the work.

The year before he died, a performance of Haydn's The Creation was attended by such composing greats as Beethoven and Salieri (who conducted the performance), and Haydn was carried in on a special throne.

The Swan of Tuonela is based on material from Sibelius' failed opera project The Building of the Boat.

Sibelius inscribed early editions of the score of The Swan of Tuonela with an atmospheric description, “Tuonela, the Kingdom of Death, the Hades of Finnish mythology, is surrounded by a broad river of black water and rapid current, on which the Swan of Tuonela glides in majestic fashion and sings.”

Brahms' Symphony No.3 begins with three powerful chords that underscore the notes F-A-flat-F. Brahms’ friend and biographer Max Kalbeck identified F-A-F as a musical cipher for “frei aber froh” – “free but happy”.

Carlos Santana's 1999 pop hit Love of My Life, featuring Dave Matthews, is based on the third movement of Brahms' Symphony No.3.
